Wear part material, WC or TiC?

March 27, 2024
In the field of high-wear components, materials such as tungsten carbide and titanium carbide are widely used for their exceptional hardness and wear resistance properties. Both materials have unique characteristics that make them suitable for different applications, and a comparison analysis can help in determining the best material for specific requirements.

Tungsten carbide, also known as cemented carbide, is a composite material composed of tungsten carbide particles bonded with a metal binder, typically cobalt. It is known for its high hardness, excellent wear resistance, and good toughness. Tungsten carbide is commonly used in carbide cutting tools (such as coal milling teeth, road milling picks…), wear parts(rotor tip set, HPGR carbide button, edge block…), and mining equipment due to its ability to withstand high temperatures and abrasive environments. It has a hardness of around 1500-2000 HV, making it one of the hardest materials available.

On the other hand, titanium carbide is a ceramic material that is also known for its high hardness and wear resistance. It has a hardness of around 2500-3000 HV, which is higher than that of tungsten carbide. Titanium carbide often used in cutting tools, wear parts, and aerospace components due to its excellent thermal stability and resistance to corrosion. However, it is more brittle compared to tungsten carbide, which can limit its use in certain applications.

When comparing the two materials, tungsten carbide is more versatile and widely used in a variety of industries due to its superior toughness and impact resistance. It is also more cost-effective compared to titanium carbide, making it a preferred choice for many applications. However, in applications where extreme hardness and wear resistance are required, titanium carbide may be the better option despite its higher cost.

In conclusion, both tungsten carbide and titanium carbide are excellent materials for high-wear components, each with its own unique properties and advantages. The choice between the two materials depends on the specific requirements of the application, such as hardness, toughness, cost, and environmental conditions. By understanding the differences between tungsten carbide and titanium carbide, engineers and designers can make informed decisions on selecting the most suitable material for their high-wear component needs.
